Isolationism in Japan
Summary: Evaluates the historical isolationism strategy of Japan.
The Japanese culture is a unique one because of its long period of isolation from the rest of the world. Japanese leaders desired this isolation because they feared the spread of Christianity among their people, which had started to occur when they traded with the Portuguese. The Tokugawa shoguns, leaders of Japan during the main isolation period, used many tactics to keep Japan away from any foreign influence. Overseas trade was banned, except a small amount with the Dutch that was strictly controlled. The Japanese were also not allowed to travel abroad, another effort to keep Japan isolated.
Japan's unique culture was created at this time, uninfluenced by other countries. It includes many things not found in any other countries. Theatre styles developed, including Kabuki and Bunraku. Kabuki has not changed much since created except that women are no longer allowed to perform, although it was a woman...
