Comparative Commentary Between Two Poems About Loss and Death
Summary: This essay is a comparison between two poems that deal with loss, distance and the ways in which human beings cope with those feelings.
These two works are both poems, the first (Poem A) having a regular rhyming pattern and the second (Poem B) with no apparent rhyme. In both cases there are deep cultural assumptions about the gender of the author. In Poem A the speaker seems to be a woman, since it is the daughter who goes back to her parents' house and takes care of them, whereas in Poem B the author is a man, because it is assumed that it is the man who goes away and then calls home.
