Summary: Roger Chillingsworth and Reverand Arthur Dimmesdale
A good story usually involves some kind of feud between two characters. A great example of one of these works would be The Scarlet Letter. The Character Roger Chillingsworth and Reverand Arthur Dimmesdale are the two characters involved in what I would call a feud. Chillingsworth was so obsessed with getting back Dimmesdale, it led to destroying himself.
When Roger Chillingworth first found out about what Hester did he acted somewhat forgiving and even tried to help Hester and her child, Pearl. "Therefore, as a man who has not thought and philosophized in vain, I seek vengeance, plot no evil against thee" (100). Chillingworth plans to get revenge on Hester's lover, but he is not obsessed with the idea. He tells Hester during their visit in the prison that he is not after her soul. "`Not thy soul', he answered, with another smile. `No not thine!'" (102).
