If benevolent assimilation really is adopting a minority into your own culture in order to help it - Then this turned out not to be a very good example of it.

The United States went around telling the Europeans off for having colonies in the Americas. It said that it was wrong, and that the United States will be the only influence in the Americas. They violently kicked Spain out of Cuba and their other colonies, saying that what Spain had done was wrong. Spain had locked away Cubans in concentration camps, crushed Cuban resistance, and generally treated them badly.
