The Crucible Character Studies
Character Studies:
John Proctor
The central character if the play, a farmer in his middle thirties. Singled out by Miller because of the vast differences he has when compared to all others in the village of Salem. Proctor is not one to repress emotions and opinions, he also regards the question of integrity as being paramount. From when he is first introduced into the play it is obvious Proctor is different, "Powerful of body, even tempered, and not easily led." To say his character does not change through out the book wouldn't be the truth. He does put himself on the line to save his family, admitting to something he is against. But in the end we do see the same character of Proctor that we see at the beginning, one whose most important characteristic is his name.
