Summary: The Giver - Lois Lowry
Jonas has many good and bad characteristics. These qualities are what set him and the Giver apart from the rest of their community, because they are truly developed. Jonas is naïve; this is shown by his dedication to being a model citizen in his society, because he does what he is told without a second thought. The Chief Elder commends him for spending "all your years till now learning to fit in, to standardize your behavior, to curb any impulse that might set you apart from the group..." (page 51-52). As Jonas begins to acquire memories, and therefore knowledge, from the Giver, he feels torn between these values that he has lived for his entire life and the value he is beginning to hold based on his newfound understanding of reality. Only until the very end of the book does Jonas realize why his rules were given...
