Miss Ruddock is lost in a society that has no firm limits. In the past, a neighbourly interest was welcomed, but no personal contact has ever been started by her with the young family she is spying on, nor with them to her. The church once offered security and help, when the vicar offered by showing her his cross, but she dismisses it by saying that a cross does not mean anything nowadays.
