The Integumentary System
The Integumentary system is part of the many systems that help makes the body function. A layered covering called skin covers the human body. The skin is the largest organ of the body and has many important functions, such as protect the body. The skin and its related structures go more than protect the body. It regulates the body temperature, absorbs materials, controls a water balance, and has sensory receptors that respond to touch and pain.
The skin (which covers and protects our outer bodies) and the mucous membrane are two types of the integumentary system. The mucous membrane is what lines the cavities and openings that are exposed to the outside of your body.
