Summary: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair is about a Lithuanian family who immigrates to America with the dream of wealth, freedom, and opportunity. Jurgis Rudkus, Ona, his soon to be wife, Marija, Jonas and the rest of the family came to America with the dream to become an American. Once the family "settles" in Jurgis and Ona get married. To help pay for the marriage it was a custom for everyone in the community to pitch in monetarily, however most of the guests had little to offer, putting the newlyweds in debt right out of the gate. The family settles in a district of Chicago called Packingtown. Thanks to his young energy and strong appearance Jurgis easily finds a job at a meat packing plant.
