Ayatollah Khomeini was one of Iran's most influential religious and political leaders. As a child Khomeini was very family and religiously oriented. As he grew religiously, Khomeini became a well known Ayatollah. He gained much of his power during his overthrow of the Shah of Iran. Although he had many obstacles in his way, such as western influences and the Shah's followers he still managed to get his way through them. In the end he was able to leave a well established Islamic state in Iran.
