Summary: Comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences of Caesar's wife, Calpurnia, and Brutus' wife, Portia.
Portia and Calpurnia both play small roles in the play The Tragedy of Julius
Caesar, by Shakespeare. Although they play small roles they are very important in the
lives of two great characters in the book. Portia, the wife of Brutus, and Calpurnia, the
wife of Caesar, have different ways of relating to their husbands.
Portia is a very caring and loving wife to Brutus. She worries about their relationship and the secrets between them. When he is not in bed she worries of his whereabouts; for example "Y'have ungently, Brutus, stole from my bed. And yesternight at supper you suddenly arose and walked about" (2.1.258-60). When she suspects something different is going on in his life she is the first one to ask. She pleads her love to her husband by reminding him that marriage is important and that the vows made are to be kept. Brutus...
