Summary: The Liberation Movement in India.
Colonial India had still been a colony of Great Britain until the mid-20th century, ruled by the British government. The liberation of India was lead by Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma was born in 1869 and died in 1948. Gandhi was known to his followers as Mahatma, "the great soul". Since Mahatma did not believe in violence, this liberation was done by speeches and protests. Britain thought of India as the land of the lords and the peasants, and that they had to protect it from all the dangers of industrialization and fundamental politics.
Mahatma Gandhi's family was wealthy enough that they were able to send him to England for his education. After Gandhi finished his studies, he came went to southern Asia, and he practiced law for the small Indian communities living there.
