Lung Cancer is a known and feared disease. The number of Canadians diagnosed with lung cancer increase every year. Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both of the lungs. Lung cancer is a deadly disease, which can be prevented. The main caused of lung cancer are cigarette smoke, second-hand smoke, hazardous substances such as asbestos, and environmental factors such as air pollution.
Cigarette smoking and second-hand smoke are the leading cause of lung cancer and is highly preventable. Cigarette smoke has 4,000 chemicals within it and 50 of the 4,000 cause cancer. The longer a person smokes and how much they smoke puts them at a high risk for lung cancer. Second-hand smoke is smoke that comes from the end of a lit cigarette and contains the same 4,000 chemicals as the inhaled filtered smoke does.
