In O Pioneers! "Knowing Oneself" is one of the key things to survive through their family, love, and life struggles. Emil, Marie, and especially Alexandra encounter many struggles throughout their life, and it is essential that they know themselves in order to get through them. All these character know themselves through someone or something and each person or thing helps their character struggle through life, but make it in the end.

Alexandra has the most struggles in the novel. She knows herself in two ways; one through the land and two, through Carl. The land is her number one priority. She knows herself thoroughly through the land. Her passion for the land is indescribable and she sees herself as one with the land.
