Cuba: A Brief History
It was a dictatorship until 1959 when there was a revolution lead by Fidel Castro. He continues to be the leader of Cuba until today. Since the Cuban revolution there has not been friendly relations between the United States and Cuba.
At one time Cuba was a colony of Spain. Before the 19th century, Spanish colonial administrators did not pay much importance to the Cuban economy. Cuba was poor in precious minerals, so Spain largely ignored Cuba. Instead Spain paid attention to its mainland colonies, that had lots of gold and riches. Cuba's economy changed after the Haitian slave Revolt of 1791. Haiti had formally been the world's leading producer of sugar. But production of sugar went down after Haitian slaves drove out their French masters...
