Summary: Pedagogy Of The Oppressed by Paulo Freire.
Paulo Freire was a radical Brazilian educator known for his methods of everyday words to teach illiterates. He encouraged his students to become skeptical about prevailing social and political assistance. He developed his educational methods during literacy campaigns among peasants in Brazil. His methods was propose in his book Pedagogy Of The Oppressed. In teachings his students, he directed their attention to critical comprehension of reality. In applying his techniques he and his many disciples used terms like village, farm, hunger, and land. These words was selected because they was related to the students. Freire became known worldwide for his advocacy of education for critical consciousness. He advanced a pedagogy of liberation which holds that students should be active participants and not passive consumers. In an interview, in Brazil he once said " we want to create schools, where questioning is not a sin." he believe in order for oppressed to be able to wage the struggle for their liberation, they must perceive the reality of oppression and not as a closed world but as a limiting situation which they can transform. In Freire's view of education ... learning to take control and achieving power are not individuals objectives. For poor and dispossessed people, strength is in numbers and social change is accomplished in unity. Power is shared by many who find strength and people in a common vision. Liberation achieved by individuals at the expense of others is an act of oppression. Personal freedom and development of individuals can only occur in harmony with others.
