A Battle with Grief: The Stone Carvers

Grief, or the process of grieving has been described as unglorified suffering brought upon by an unfortunate incident such as the death, or loss of a loved one. Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross initially described the process following such loss in her book, On Death and Dying. Kubler-Ross broke down the process into five parts: Denial and Isolation, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. In the novel The Stone Carvers, the author Jane Urquhart demonstrates many of these stages through the main character Klara Becker. Klara experiences the stages of the grieving process following the death of her first love. Parallels are written by the author connecting the grieving process with the art of carving. In the early stages of the novel, Klara learns the skill of woodcarving, which is passed down to her from her Grandfather.
