Moebius Syndrome
Moebius Syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized by lifetime facial paralysis, which causes the inability to smile or frown (McCarrell p1). Since only 1 in 2 million people in Canada have Moebius Syndrome, empathy for Moebius patients will only come with knowledge about this syndrome. Due to the rareness of Moebius, not much is actually known little research is dedicated to finding a cure.
CAUSES OF MOEBIUS SYNDROME
How a person gets Moebius Syndrome appears to be genetic, because children are born with it, therefore there is no way to prevent this disease (Moebius p1). There is also an increased risk of an affected parent to pass the syndrome on to their offspring and it affects boys and girls equally, leading researchers to believe in the genetic pathway of Moebius (Bridges p1).
