The 1950's were known for the racial struggle among African Americans and their American right to equality. Many ask who contributed more to civil rights progress: government officials or African Americans themselves? African Americans themselves started the civil rights movement and it can be proved in three events: Brown vs. the Board of Education, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and The Selma March. These events are all part of the effort to prove equality among blacks and each one was initiated by African Americans.

In the town of Topeka, Kansas a girl named Linda Brown walked one mile to her black elementary school. Her father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her in a white elementary school, only 7 blocks away, but was rejected by the principal.
