McMains started researching the material for this text by accident. He was researching information on Ireton, Cromwell's son-in-law, when he came across mention of Cromwell's death and then sought to find an explanation in some state documents. The documents mentioned malaria but stated many non-malaria like symptoms. At this point he decided to start making a chronological account of Cromwell's sickness and record his symptoms in a day-by-day record. Although, McMains did not start out looking for murder, as Cromwell's cause of death, he quickly came to that conclusion. Before The Death of Oliver Cromwell was accepted for publishing many experts including people in the fields of history, forensics, medicine, and literature examined it to ensure its accuracy.
