W.O. Mitchell's short story, The Day Jake Made Her Rain, contains many figures of speech. These descriptions are used to add depth to the story and make it more entertaining. A figure of speech is defined as a form of expression used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener. An example of this is, "his long legs kinked up like a grasshopper ready to spring."
