Pious Aeneas
When asked by the gods to do something it is often difficult to refuse. This happens to Aeneas when the gods ask him to leave for Italy against his will. The hero has to choose between Dido, the love of his life, or his duty. Aeneas is right to leave Dido the way he did; he has obligations he has to uphold. Aeneas is following his heart; telling him to leave. His body is telling him to stay; to calm and comfort Dido:
"Duty-bound,
Aeneas, though he struggled with desire
To calm and comfort her in all her pain,
To speak to her and turn her mind from grief,
And though he sighed his heart out, shaken still
With love of her, yet took the course heaven gave him
And went back to the fleet (p110 ll 545-51)."
