When the Bolsheviks came to power following the October Revolution in 1917, stating, "We shall now begin to build the socialist order," they enforced a number of measures towards fulfilling Lenin's promise of "bread, peace and land." The Provisional government had previously come to power, full of promise and hope, but perished after only six months. Would the Bolsheviks share the same fate? Lenin had no anxieties about removing the freedoms the provisional government had put into place, arguing that it was only an instrument of bourgeois capitalism, but did he fulfill his promise of bread peace and land? Many regarded Lenin as an inspiration to both Russia and exploited classes everywhere, whereas others believed him to be a cruel power-driven tyrant.
