Aboriginal Australians: Subjects or Citizens?
"Between the years 1788-1970 were the Aborigines considered subjects or citizens?"
The Aborigines were native and had a unique culture that was not understood by the white. In 1788 the government had complete control over the colony and its people, and treated the Aborigines differently. But the question remains were they subjects or citizens? In my opinion the Aborigines were not citizens - members, native or naturalized, of a state or a nation, but rather they were subjects -someone who is under the rule of a sovereign, state, or government.
The government policy was that they could take any land that did not belong to a Christian and settle there even if there were other inhabitants there. The Aborigines didn't understand that because they had set boundaries and if another group wanted to settle on their land then they would trade and this way settle the deal. The white Europeans came and took whatever land...
