Summary: Details about the Great Depression
For people living in the cities, the Great Depression was nearly intolerable.  The cities were poverty stricken and filthy.  Most people lived in Hoovervilles to stay off of the streets.  They made money by inventing odd-jobs for themselves such as doing repair work or selling produce to pedestrians.  In rural areas farmers were dumping countless jug after jug of milk into the streets, and letting their crops rot in the fields because they could not sell them, while families in the cities went hungry because they had no money to buy the food.  If I had to choose between the two places to live, I would have to choose living in the rural areas.  The farmers seemed to live a fairly normal life.  They were less affected by the poverty and could produce their own food.  Food was one of...
