An Independent Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the oldest African nations, dating back to over 2,000 years ago. The word "Ethiopia" comes from a Greek word meaning "sunburned faces," applied by the ancient Greeks to people living south of Egypt b/c of their darker skin. The first emperor of Ethiopia, Emperor Menelik I, was the son of the Biblical Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. Ethiopia has six Semitic languages; Tigre is the oldest form of Ethiopian language. Ethiopia went through a golden age from 1277-1500 in which peace, prosperity, and expansion were the main characteristics of the nation. Also, Ethiopia was one of only two African nations that were able to withstand European imperialism and preserve their independence.
