When collective bargaining failed, unions used strikes (Between 1881-1900 there were over 24,000 strikes in the nations factories, mines, mills and railroads)
A. 1887- Great Railroad Strike: 1st National Strike
-Cause: the Railroad lowered wages by 10%
-Effect: the union went on strike-led to riots and violence around nation. President Hayes used federal troops to put down strike; Union is blamed.
B. 1886- Haymarket Riot
-Cause: during a Chicago labor rally an anarchist throws a bomb that killed 18 people including policemen (Although the Knights of Labor was not directly responsible; the public blamed the union.
-Effect: Anarchists were convicted of conspiracy and 3 were hanged. Americans feared union violence.
C. 1892- Homestead Strike @ Carnegie Steel
-Cause: Carnegie and his partner, Henry Frick, planned to cut union wages. The union...
