- English Language Timeline (important events and individuals)
- The basis of the English language is found in ancient Sanskrit. The island of England was occupied by five different groups of people before it developed as an independent nation.
- Three periods of the English language:
- Old English from 450 - 1150 AD
- Middle English from 1150 - 1500
- Modern English from 1500 - present
- Early `inhabitants'
- 5000-3500 B.C. Indo-Europeans - The Indo-Europeans spread out from an area north of the Black Sea, probably the Ural Mountains. The existence of Indo-European accounts for the similarity of words in such languages as French, German, Czech, Norwegian, Persian, etc.
- 1500 B.C. Vedas - Sanskrit was the language of ancient India and belongs to the Indo-European language group. It was written in the Vedas (religious books) and resembles Latin and Greek. It is the oldest literature in any Indo-European language.
