Second-Party System
Summary: The reasons for the development of the second-party system in the United States.
During Jackson's second term, a new party rose in popularity to try to dominate over the Democrats. The formation of the Whig party threatened everything the Democrats had gained since Jackson's first term. The reformers that started it brought in support from the people with religious, political and social goals. The development of the second party system forever changed the politics of America.
The Whig party started when the National Republican party changed their name, they chose Whig because it associated them with the American patriots who opposed King George III. This party broadened its base in both the North and the South. Although Jackson had swept victory in consecutive elections, his policies alienated people who drew to the Whig party. Jackson's opposition to nullification and federal aid for internal improvements alienated southerners from the improvements of the North.
