Trans World Airlines, Inc. (TWA) was chartered in the state of Delaware in 1978, and is the successor to the business of its predecessor corporation, Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc., originally formed in 1934. TWA, though, did not become a public company until November of 1983. In the early years, TWA was at the forefront of the airline industry. On April 17, 1944, TWA made a record flight from Burbank to Washington in 6 hours and 57 minutes. On January 30, 1947, TWA introduced the first transatlantic all-cargo service, which was the first all-cargo service ever operated over the North Atlantic. In 1961, TWA was the first airline to institute in-flight motion pictures. The automated Doppler radar system was introduced by TWA on its transatlantic flight from New York to London on October 1, 1962, which was the first transatlantic flight to ever operate without a professional navigator.
