DUDDY THE AMORAL HERO
    Mordecai Richler author of the novel, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, was born in 1931 in the ghetto world of Jewish Montreal.  The novel is in the top ten Canadian works of the twentieth century by MacLean's because "The Montreal author made the indomitable Jewish up-and-comer of his 1959 novel so real he walks off the page."  Duddy Kravitz, the main character in the novel is also born in the ghetto world of Montreal. Duddy is a young plotting, resourceful, independent, elusive and deceitful Jewish boy with little sympathy.  Duddy grows to be an unfeeling, manipulating, uncaring, money seeking and power hungry man. Throughout the course of the novel, Duddy illustrates all the elements of a traditional hero on a journey.
