After leaving the Senate House of Sarajevo on 28th of June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie where brutally shot by Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Nationalist group the Black Hand. With this one shot that was "heard around the world," we would come to know the true horrors of war through the development of the machine gun, the flamethrower, mustard gas, and the slaughter of millions. So how is it that the death of one man can lead to so much bloodshed? Perhaps knowing some of the factors that caused this war might prove useful to understanding how one act of high treason could lead to such devastation.
