How Women Were Treated in Pakistan in the Novel "Shabanu"
In the story, Shabanu, by Suzanne Fisher Staples, readers are exposed to the violence toward women, as well as their lack of freedom. Sharma's physically abuse is an example of the violence toward women. Shabanu, unable to do what she wants is an example of women's limited freedom.
In Pakistan the violence towards women is sometimes harsh, even when a woman doesn't do wrong. For example, Sharma was badly treated by her husband, though she didn't deserve it. That kind of misery is what no woman need to go through, especially if it caused by her husband. Sharma running away was rebellious in her culture, yet her family members respected her. In addition, Shabanu's father beat her up because she tried to run away from home. Shabanu's father did find her, but it is a little disappointing that she was happy even though she was getting beat up...
