Positive Discrimination
The Lower and Higher Class Status in the Victorian Age Represented in Pygmalion. As we could see in the play Pygmalion there was a huge distinction between social classes. It was much different than nowadays. Now we sort people on rich and poor as to their property-their houses, style of dressing, cars. All the people have the right to attend school free.
But then the rich people were not just wealthy but they had to respect quite strict manners, not only behaving manners, but also speaking manners. They were privileged -they had a right to school themselves, travel, and attend to special concerts and operas, driving with taxies. But as many writers described they were really "empty-headed", snobbish, senseless and they only discussed about weather and health. On the other hand smart and talented second-class people who were not handicapped with all rules of behaving properly also lived. They did not have a chance to educate themselves and help the upper class with their knowledge, practical experiences and common sense, something the upper class did not have.
I must mention the different dialect they used. The rich ones spoke perfect English, but the poor ones used various dialects which were shameful for the wealthy people. The only opportunity to be treated nobly was to learn to speak perfect English.
I am happy that now there is no similar distinction. If there is, my smart schoolmates from Dobrepolje will have o chance to become famous scientists.
