In 1776, many changes take place within the states. Witherspoon, the speaker for New Jersey, changes their vote for independence "that was the reason for the change we've been instructed to vote for independence" (Stone, 20). Witherspoon and New Jersey once not for independence now have changed because "our New Jersey legislature has recalled the old delegation to this congress and has sent a new one" (Stone, 20). At the beginning of the story, six states vote Nay for independence. The representatives of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North, and South Carolina were once against having independent states.
