In The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, one of the themes is about Traditional vs. Generational Gap. Traditional is belief, custom, story or culture passed down from age to age (Generation to generation). Generational Gap is the opening or space between the old generation and the new generation.
Traditional vs. Generational Gap always occur in America the most, which is also the setting of this novel. Because many immigrants that have different backgrounds start their new family in America, but they still following their traditional that is from their motherland. They were the old generation. The new generation is those who born in America, one of the most advanced country in the world and it is a diversity nation, which causing the ideas and values were totally different between the old generation and the new generation and it also make it difficult to communicate between generations...
