Just as football players storm onto the field as a means of intimidation, the Europeans charged into the Congo and played the game as if it were being played on their home turf. While playing the game of imperialism, many fouls were committed by the Europeans. These fouls lead to the natives being named the more civilized of the two groups. Webster's Intermediate Dictionary defines a civilized person as "someone who shows good manners, a refined person" (Webster's). The natives' humanity is seen in their culture, their response to the inhumane treatment they endured at the hands of the Europeans, and how the native "cannibals" showed more restraint than Kurtz.
