Jessie Redmon Fauset is known as one of the great women writers of the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem renaissance was an explosion of creative activity centered in New York, and in particular Harlem. Her involvement with the movement is greatly attributed to her post as literary editor of Crisis. Crisis, under the direction of W.E.B. DuBois, was a publication of the NAACP. During her career as literary editor she also wrote regular articles for the publication and was involved in the New York community. Fauset has been noted for fostering such literary greats as Jean Toomer, and Langston Hughes. The Crisis was a well-read periodical that reached many African-Americans and spoke about literary movements of the day and other important subjects. While editor of the Crisis she was also editor of The Brownies Book, another NAACP publication geared toward African-American children.
