Secularization of a Once Puritan Society
Summary: This essay describes thoroughly the transformation of societal attitudes from those that were piously religious to those that became more and more secular.
Throughout history, society has undergone continual change. In order to conform to the evolving needs and desires of its peoples, civilization has constantly developed and transformed in many manners. Many very significant and wide-reaching changes in society involve the transformation of a particular sentiment among the people. Such a sentiment often relates to religion. One natural and pivotal shift in society deals with the movement of societal values from purely religiously motivated to more secularly influenced. A perfect example of such an evolution occurred in the Puritan society, which thrived many hundreds of years ago. Evidently, colonial society in America during the seventeenth and eighteenth century exhibits one very clear example of a transfer in thinking. Such a transition involved the evolution from the pious and devout convictions of Puritanism as written by John Calvin, to the practical sentiment of those such as William Bradford and Anne Bradstreet...
