There are many characters in this book; however, the main and most significant character in this book is Johnny Gunther. At the beginning of the book he was a fit and fine boy. He was tall and skinny, and very blonde. He didn't express his emotions very openly. He went to the doctor to because he suffered eye strain in the summer before he had started to take exercises to strengthen his visual acuity.
