Abagnale's talent for disguising his identity first surfaces when he is transferred to a new public school, and he impersonates the substitute French teacher the entire first week of school. Abagnale, Sr. is in trouble with the IRS for tax fraud, and the family is forced to move into a smaller home and to sell their nice car. Frank's mother has a taste for higher living and begins to cheat on Frank's father, finally divorcing him after a time. When the divorce is being finalized, Frank is asked to choose between his parents, but decides to run away instead.
