Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper

Grace Brewster Murray was born on December 9, 1906 in New York, New York. She was the eldest of three children. As a child, Grace was fascinated with any sort of gadget. It is said that at one time during her childhood she took apart all of the alarm clocks in the house to find how they work, but she might have found out a little more from her parents when they got home. Still interested in gadgets, Grace Murray graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics and physics in 1928. She then became an instructor at Vassar while studying mathematics at Yale University. From Yale, Grace earned an MA in 1930 and a PhD in 1934. Her doctorate in Math was something quite rare in that time, especially for a woman. Also in 1930 Grace married Vincent Foster Hopper, changing her name to Grace Murray Hopper. Her husband...
