Identifying with the Archetypical Character
Summary: Short analysis of the film "Pulp Fiction", and how it makes the mythical character a common man.
Pulp Fiction is an excellent example of a trend in entertainment, which is to make a recognizable persona or archetypical character more human. In Pulp Fiction the gangster characters are very different from the run of the mill Hollywood flick. They are more human, less distant, and easier to comprehend. This allows us to become more involved in the plot, as the "criminal" is portrayed in a whole new way. The first step in this process is to show the gangsters as we would expect to see them. The scene opens with two men in black suits, wearing shades, driving the typical gangster car, in the typical gangster setting. These gangster trademarks signal to the audience that they are seeing a villainous criminal character. The second step in transforming our preconceived notions is to have the typical gangster character act in an unfamiliar gangster, more human way. The...
