"Hungry, hungry", said a man who has been beaten almost to his death. This man has no shoes and his clothes are so ripped that they look like rags. He hasn't had a decent meal for eight months and he is deathly ill. He has just gotten back to an empty village where there is no sign that anyone lived there. Out of breath and energy, from walking home, the man drops to the ground and dies of sadness. What happen to this Aztec Indian? Unfortunately, the Spaniards had enslaved him as their reward of conquering the Aztecs. This reward was called an encomienda. The Indians and the Spaniards had different views on encomiendas. The Spaniards thought that it was an ideal plan, but the Indians thought of it as pure torture. The encomienda system did show benefits while showing many problems.
