Management of Attempted Suicide

Many people who attempt suicide are admitted to a hospital emergency room in a comatose state. After an overdose of a potentially lethal drug has been confirmed, the drug should be removed from the patient, attempting to prevent absorption and to expedite excretion; symptomatic treatment to keep the patient alive should be started; and any known antidote should be given if the specific drug can be identified. Injuries to patients, which are self-administered, and life threatening should be hospitalized and be assessed by a Psychiatrist.
For all individuals who attempt suicide, an immediate assessment should be made to figure out the core of the problems and actions that the patient felt the need to attempt suicide.
