At1: Planning- Making Fertilizers
Ammonia + sulphuric acid ®Ammonium Sulphate + water
Acid + Alkali ® salt + water
Prediction: A neutralisation equation will take place, as the acid and alkali react together to form a neutral solution. A neutralisation reaction is the process in which the acidity or alkalinity of a substance is destroyed. A Neutralisation reaction is an exothermic reaction. This means it gives out energy to the surroundings in the form of heat. From this I can predict that there will be a rise in temperature. To check that the substance is in fact neutral, I will use universal indicator.
Apparatus: Ammonia solution (approximately 2M concentration)
Sulphuric acid (approximately 1M concentration)
Glass stirring rod
250cm³ conical flask
50cm³ measuring cylinder
Universal indicator paper
Method:
- ) Place 10cm³ of sulphuric acid into a conical flask
- ) Add the universal indicator to the conical flask, until the sulphuric acid turns...
