Summary: This essay analyzes the Papacy of the 13th and 14th centuries in Europe.
We all think of the church as a holy place, a place of worship, a reserved and calm place. This view was not unlike those living in the 13th and 14th centuries. The lavish style of the church caused many problems in the economy that eventually created great conflicts leading to the decline of the church's power. The church held the most power in this time period because everyone thought they "held the keys" to heaven. Everything was about the church and everyone was absorbed in church power and law that corruption was often overlooked. What ever the church said went. No one ever questioned the Church authority because everyone believed that the Church had a direct link to God and that if they wronged the church, they were wronging God.
