Discussion of Opening Sequence of "Shakespeare in Love"
Summary: Discusses the opening sequence of the film "Shakespeare in Love" directed by John Madden. Also discusses what it suggests about the period in which the film is set.
"Shakespeare in Love" was set in London, 1593. In the opening sequence, the camera has a downwards panning motion inside the Rose theatre which has a roof made of thatch and three floors. The Rose is almost entirely made of wood, and each floor has rectangular pillars with ledges. There are glass windows on the middle floor although the theatre has an open top. From the ground of soil, there are stairs to the stage. Nearly all of the features just mentioned about `the Rose Theatre' are very unlike modern day theatres. A script is left on the ground entitled `The Lamentable Tragedie of the MoneyLender's Revenge'd'. This shows by the language used that the film was set in the time of Shakespeare.
