Throughout the book, Odysseus employs many disguises. These disguised either physical or psychological are used to further Odysseus' interest in his journey. His disguises are used to bring out the unbiased truth and opinions of people. He uses a disguise to cloak him in a village, and while he plots for revenge against the suitors. No matter what the use, disguises are essential to Odysseus' journey home.
An example of a physical disguise that Odysseus employed in his journey home was his heavily modified version of his journey that he told to Eumalus. Odysseus' disguise as a beggar employed many of Odysseus' beliefs, so that the beggar was partly Odysseus. The physical disguise helped Odysseus through his journey, enabling him to pass through the countryside of Ithaca without being detected, and enabling him to mount a surprise attack on the suitors as directed by Athena.
