Audrey Kathleen van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston was born on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Her mother Ella van Heemstra was a Dutch Baroness and her father Joseph Hepburn -Ruston was an English banker. She had a hard childhood moving back and forth for her father's job. When she was five she was sent to boarding school in England. A year later her father left the family for good. To take her mind off the hard times she began ballet lessons at her school in England. Things just continued to get worse in 1938 her parents divorce was finalized and the outbreak of the war worried her mother. So her mother forced her to leave school and return home to Holland. In 1940 German troops invaded Arnhem Holland and ruined Audrey's already shattered life. The Nazis took away her family's property, homes, bank accounts, securities, and their jewelry.
